Artist in Residence Seamus Farrell

We are delighted to welcome Seamus Farrell as our artist in residence. Farrell will conduct workshops with young people during the festival in the Aistear building. The Festival gratefully acknowledges the support given by Sheila Pratschke, Director of the Irish Cultural Centre, Paris. We acknowledge the additional support from the Arts Council 'Culture Connects' programme marking Ireland's presidency of the EU, January-June 2013

The Chatham Saxophone Quartet

Music Network presents Chatham Saxophone Quartet, an exciting new lrish ensemble whose expansive repertoire spans the centuries. Their repertoire focuses on some of the most exhilarating music by contemporary composers including Philip Glass and Michael Nyman, along with pieces by Bach, Singlée, Webnern, Piazolla and Gershwin. An exciting addition for Mountshannon will be The Shannon Suite by Ciarán Farrell.

Big Dance Night

GYPSY REBEL RABBLE is a Dublin-based Irish bluegrass folk band with a reputation for energetic live shows merging a furious DIY punk song-writing and performance ethic with a smooth vocal style and a strong emphasis on harmonies. Last year the band played the Shannon Winter Music Festival, Vantastival, Electric Picnic and many others. They’re currently working on their first studio album to be released later this year. Dancing continues with local DJ Frank Bouchier (RUAILLE BUAILLE). Admission €10

Gemma Hayes

Ballyporeen native Gemma Hayes has come a long way since her debut album in 2002. Now she runs her own record label and her music has been used on international hits Gray’s Anatomy and The Vampire Diaries. With her fourth album Let it Break, Gemma has meticulously crafted an album which sees her embrace a wealth of new styles while remaining loyal to her roots. In an intimate setting Gemma will be showcasing her eclectic blend of folk, pop and electronica. Church of Ireland 8.30pm Admission €1 2

Local Artists Exhibition Opening

Our annual group exhibition of local visual artists opens this afternoon with a display of contemporary art of various media. The artists have been invited to base their work on this year's festival theme, 'Connections'. Although some of the work on display may be reserved, most of the art will be on sale during the festival.

19th Century Mountshannon Paintings

The Very Reverend Lucius Henry O’Brien was born in 1842 into an eminent Irish family of the landed gentry whose ancestry can be traced directly to Brian Boru. In 1867 he was ordained into the Church of Ireland, and in 1905 he became Dean of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick. In the late 19th century he produced six watercolour paintings – three of Mountshannon street scenes, three of the surrounding countryside. Come and see all six paintings and listen to a talk about their historical background.

The Aistear (building if raining) 2.30pm After a lifetime studying the forces that hold the world together, Greg decided there were only two substances worth working with – words and wood. The things he makes for children are mostly carved from words because they last longer.
